NetLibrary FAQ

Q: Do I need an account to access eAudiobooks?
A: Yes and No. You can search and listen to a free preview of most eAudiobooks in your affiliated library's collection, without logging in. To check out, download and listen to eAudiobooks on your personal computer and compatible portable listening devices, you will need an account.

Q: Do I need any software on my computer to listen to eAudiobooks?
A: Yes.  You will need Windows Media Player version 9.0 - 11.0.

Q: Can I play eAudiobooks on portable listening devices?
A: Yes.   You can listen to eAudiobooks on portable listening devices, including portable music players that support playback of large secure or protected wma files.

To have an optimal experience when listening to an eAudiobook, it is recommended that you select devices that support features such as bookmarking and full time stamping. Devices must have a storage capacity of at least 256 MB, since the average CD quality eAudiobook file size is 140 MB.

Devices that support bookmarking allow you to designate a place within a file and return to that place. Some devices limit time tracking to a pre-defined period of time and often eAudiobook files may be longer than the pre-defined period in the device. In this case, the complete length of the file will not be shown in the device. Devices that support full time stamping do not limit the time tracking of a file in any way and will allow the full length of an eAudiobook file to display.

If you already have a device and want to check if it supports secure or protected wma files you may want to check the documentation provided with your device or your device manufacturer's Website.

Q: How many eAudiobooks can I check out simultaneously?
A: You can download up to ten (10) eAudiobook items directly to your personal computer for playback using Windows Media Player or a portable listening device. Once you have reached the checkout limit, you cannot download additional eAudiobook items until a currently downloaded eAudiobook automatically expires. An eAudiobook item automatically return to your library when the checkout period expires and you can no longer access the item from your personal computer or portable listening device.

Q: What is the checkout period for eAudiobooks?
A:  3 weeks.  If you check out an item, you have access to that item for the checkout period. You cannot check in eAudiobooks before the checkout period expires. The eAudiobook item automatically returns to your affiliated library.

Q: Can I renew eAudiobooks without downloading the file a second time?
A: Yes.  Renew the eAudiobook file any time during the original checkout period to extend your access to the eAudiobook title. You must be logged in to your account to renew. If you have not deleted the file from your personal computer (and portable listening devices), you do not have to download the file, just renew it and obtain a new license. An eAudiobook can only be renewed one time.

Q: Can I burn an eAudiobook to a CD?
A: No.  Burning an eAudiobook file to a CD for listening to on a CD player is not allowed. If you do burn an eAudiobook file, encryptions on the eAudiobook file will make the file unusable.

Q: Can I download eAudiobooks to public computers in my library?
A: No. We strongly advise users not to download eAudiobooks to a public computer and the Burleson Library does not allow downloading to public computers and does not provide the necessary equipment to then transfer the eAudiobook file to your portable listening device.

Q: How long does it take to download an eAudiobook?

Q: Can I download and play an eAudiobook on a Mac?
A: No. eAudiobooks cannot be played on Macs because the latest version of Window Media Player available for Macs (version 9) is based on Windows Media Rights Manager version 1.3. We use version 2.x licenses for downloadable eAudiobooks in order to maintain a high level of security.

Q: Can I download and play an eAudiobook on an iPod?
A: No. eAudiobooks cannot be played on iPods. iPods use the .aac file format and the .aac file format does not support the Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection required by our eAudiobooks at this time. DRM protection helps ensure that the content of our publishing partners is secure, especially when items are checked out from the library's collection and borrowed by a user rather than purchased. This Digital Rights Management technology allows checked out items to expire on the due date.
